Movie Reviews

The Silence of the Lambs
Though this movie was released way back in 1991 and most of you would have seen this, I watched it only yesterday. I had heard this movie's name being referenced whenever anyone talks about a thriller, but didn't knew anything more than that. So, here I was, without any expectations and without even a clube about what the movie was all about.

Plot Outline: A serial killer called "Buffallo Bill" abducts beautiful fat girls and kills them and takes their skin!! Now, a young FBI Trainee (read: Jodie Foster) is assigned to meet up with a former psychologist cum hannibal (read: Anthony Hopkins) who is in prison to get to the root of this case.

Verdict: I just love Anthony Hopkins for his sophisticated gentlemanish looks. He symbolises what we all call "cool" and "calm", the kind of James Bond look. Jodie Foster, though don't have great looks, scored well in her acting skills (though nothing to rave about). But what holds the story and why it went on to become a big hit is undoubtedly the story!! The viewer also gets involved into this mystery and I was almost on the verge of falling down from my seat (read: was watching it at 2:00 AM, so you know what I mean). I could guess most of the scenes, not because of my brilliance, but because I've seen so many such scenes in our good old Bollywood/Kollywood/Mollywood (of course, they were inspired). Finally, it's definitely worth a movie to watch! Cursing myself as to how I missed such a good movie for such long!

Ratings: 4.5/5.

Anbe Sivam (Tamil)
Sun TV aired this movie this Saturday evening and since I had no work and was just out of bed, decided to go ahead and watch it (Kiran was the heroine!!). I had seen the songs quite a lot before and I like the one pictured on top of a bus very much (ellai machi machi, thalai suthi suthi....).

Plot Outline: A communist/atheist falls in love with the girl of a feudal lord, tries to run away and get married (Odi poyi kalyanam than kattikalama...), meets with an accident, face becomes ugly, adopts a dog (who by the way was the cause of the accident), and after years stands ground for his beliefs in communism.

Verdict: I believe Kamal Haasan is one of the most underrated actor/director in the world. Some people even say that he was born on the wrong side of the earth, TRUE! For a person like me, who, though born into the middle of Communism and Carl Marxism (I hail from Kerala you know) and didn't know anything about what communism in the real sense is, it was an eye opener. I don't know the other faces behind this project, but Kamal Haasan should be praised to make this bold movie, not for the story or anything, but for the message it carried. A good movie and worth a watch if you haven't watched already. PS: Though one expected a lot from Kiran in this movie, was disappointed to see her "dismal" performance in a Sari. ;-(

Ratings: 4/5.

A Nightmare on Elm Street
After my first tryst with a horror movie last week (The Exorcism of Emily Rose), I was a little skeptical to watch this movie. It's been lying somewhere inside my PC's hard disk for a long time and after some agonising minutes for decision, finally watched it!

Plot Outline: A few teenagers have nightmares, one by one everyone gets killed by this so called asshole boogeyman (or some Freddie), one gal tries to capture him from her sleep! Ahw!

Verdict: Expecting this to be a horror movie, I was clinching my thumbs when the boogeyman was coming into the picture... he is coming, coming... ha ha haha... looking at him I couldn't stop laughing. He looked like a character taken straight out of Scoobie and Shaggy. I don't think even my 2 year old nephew will get freightened look at that guy. The expression of the characters faces when they come in close contact with the boogeyman will also make you laugh! Watch this if you have nothing to do and are catching flies instead.

Ratings: 0.4/5 (for making me believe it's a horror movie and for the damages caused to me by excessive laughter!!)

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!!
