A young reporter!

I was watching Times NOW today and saw a report on TamilNadu politics where every party worker was wearing some kind of a fashion accessory to show their sincerity towards their party and leaders (read: T-shirt, necklaces, saris, rings). At the end of the report, a charming young women reporter gave her take on the story and said, "This is Dhanya Rajendran with camera person XYZ reporting from Chennai for Times NOW"..... Suddenly I had a flash in my mind and got a feeling that I know this person... Yes, I knew her.

Circa my high school/college days.... There was a smart, young, confident, intelligent bespectacled gal with full of energy featured in the daily newspaper for winning the Excellent Young Scientist of India award at the National Childrens Science Congress. Yes, she was Dhanya Rajendran, 2 years senior to me and whom I had high regards for. I befriended her through my school mate in my college days and used to admire her intelligence. We used to compete with each other for Quizzes, Debates, Stage Shows, Dramas and she always ran away with the prices with me at times being the runner up or a distant third.

Then I lost touch with my college and college friends. I thought she might have gone ahead with her MBA and will be donning the corporate dossier and was surprised to see her in a TV reporter role. Through a quick search in Google I came to know that after finishing her B.com she went to the Asian College of Journalism in Chennai and had already worked for Indiavision TV (a mallu news channel) for 1 year and for the New Indian Express in Chennai.

Good to see you Dhanya. Wish you great success as a reporter and may you become the next Burkha Dutta!!

PS: Dhanya, contact me if by chance you read this article.

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!!
