Of Molestation & TRP Ratings

The whole of Mainstream Media (MSM) is making a fracas out of the New Year Mumbai Molestation case... Yes, in all senses, what happened to those two victims is beyond imagination and the perpetrators are to be punished. But making it a headline news for the past 2 days is definitely not worth it, especially when those who were sexually harassed refuse to lodge a formal complaint with the police saying they are not happy with the media attention the incident has been garnering. One's heart goes out to the two unfortunate NRI women, who are trying to forget the horrible incident, but are reliving the horror everyday thanks to the media-glare.

Now, if you are an analyzer or a keen watcher of MSM & the print media in general, all that matters for them at the end of the day is their TRP ratings and how much more are they able to get out of an issue. This is especially true if it has got anything to do with sex or social taboos! Look at the coverage that anything remotely connected with sleaze gets in the media.

There are always cheap sex crazy elements lying in to molest women in every part of the world. And the best weapon against them is self defense from the weaker sex, be it through martial arts or modern gadgetry! Yes, India is still a long way from Gandiji's dream of a woman being able to walk through the streets in the night scot free!!

Get over it folks! Yes, what happened was horrible... but you ought to remember that you need to make sure you are safe! As Mumbai Police Commissioner said, we cannot have a policeman protecting each & every citizen of India... And MSM, please start reporting other serious issues which will effect our lives in a much larger sphere than trying to get some brownie points!

  1. Re:MSM & TRP rate I absolutely agree with that. But this particular incident cannot be looked at into as a cheap publicity gimmick.

But pls don't justify what the Mumbai Police Commissioner has said. If this incident has had happened in a private place (which already is happening in the workplaces, theaters, buses, public places, temples and of course some secret places too), may be we can accept to some extent but this has happened in a public place and during a festival time and where people were moving around. The police department should anticipate problems.

These weaker sexs were accompanied by the so called stronger sex but they too were pushed and thrown away. It is the responsibility of the Law and security forces to bring law enforcement in such situations. If 100 policemen can guard one politician who cares less for the country or guard a cinestar, can't the police depart ensure safety for the public? If they cannot ensure safety for the public, what are they for? This is not yet anoother incident.

It doesn't mean the weaker sex has to be accompanied by a policemen but make the place safer bring strict rules and regulations, take people of this nature into custody. These can be brought into control. Do you think the same could have happed in Gulf countries?

It was reportedly 70 to 80 pple this number would have been 20 or 30 if they had fear for police. Obviously, the police depart should be ashamed that criminals don't have fear for the police. If this many number of people had the gutts to do what they want in the public it means it is only the laxity of law and nothing else and pls don't justify the commissioner.

Btw, the so-called weaker sex should also make sure to go places when and only when they are strong or accompanied by stronger pple not just the stronger sex!

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!!
