Ghajini & Totti Jaya Trailers

Yesterday I chanced upon the trailer videos of Ghajini and Totti Jaya in Vijay TV and was very impressed by both. First off, I was impressed with the way the trailers are being made in Kollywood. From the days of showing just the name of the movie and the names of the people behind the scenes with just a song running behind it, I think Kollywood movie previews have graduated to the next level. I always liked the way trailers were made in Hollywood and it's a nice surprise to see Kollywood following in these footsteps. PS: One wonders if both these movies have the punch that is shown in the trailers... :-)

India - The next R&D Hub

It's always nice to read what an international university has to say about India and its growing cult in the international scenario. Now, here's an in-depth article from Wharton University.... India has long enjoyed a reputation as a destination for IT and business process outsourcing. Now, the country is fast emerging as a major center for cutting-edge research and development (R&D) projects for global multinationals such as Microsoft and Motorola as well as Indian firms. More and more companies in industries ranging from IT and telecommunications through pharmaceuticals and biotech are setting up ambitious R&D projects, in part to serve the Indian market, but also with an eye to delivering new generations of products faster to the global market. What forces are shaping these trends? What does the future hold? To answer these questions and more, Knowledge@Wharton collaborated with The Economic Times Intelligence Group in Mumbai, India, on this special report on R&

Happy Sri Krishna Jayanti

Sri Krishna Jayanti marks the celebration of the birth of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. Lord Sri Krishna was born on the 'Rohini' nakshatram (star) on Ashtami day. The festival Sri Krishna Jayanti is also known as Gokulashtami and Janmashtam. The actual day of celebration can be on two different days as the star 'Rohini' and Ashtami may not be on the same day. This occurs between August and September on the Christian calendar. Sri Krishna is Lord Vishnu's eighth avatar (incarnation) on earth. He is considered to be the Lord's most glorious incarnations. Even saying and remembering His name brings joy because Sri Krishna himself was a manifestation of joy at all levels and in all walks of life. No other God in the Hindu pantheon, or for that matter in any other religion, is associated with so many romantic tales and so fully radiating with all the divine attributes as Sri Krishna. Go BPO..Go...

The booming information technology (IT) sector has emerged the most happening sector in the country. The buoyant results for 2004-05 revealed it was yet another promising year and that the future too seems very bright. It emerged a major engine of growth for the national economy as it leaped from revenue of just $ 12 million in 1980 to a huge $22 billion in 2004-05. It grew from strength to strength by permeating each and every sphere of life, be it manufacturing or services, automobiles or banking, telecom or retail trade, teaching or healthcare. “Now India is a leading IT hub in the world, employing over a million-plus workforce within the country, serving domestic and overseas customers. Indirect employment generated by IT-enabled services (ITeS) and software industry is estimated to be 2.5 million, contributing heavily to the changing face of household incomes in both urban and rural areas,” an official release here today said. The IT industry was highly optimistic about a

Godrej TV

In a significant foray, the Rs 500 crore appliances division of Godrej & Boyce Mfg Company Ltd is entering the full line consumer electronics segment, and may launch its colour televisions in the Indian market in 2006. Godrej & Boyce's plans to enter the CTV segment come at a time when the Rs 20,000 crore CTV market is getting increasingly competitive, and is dominated by Korean majors like LG and Samsung and the Videocon portfolio. Indian players, thus far, have failed to make any impact with brands like BPL and Onida being essentially marginal players. The market is, however, growing at 15% a year. It's still unclear how Godrej plans to go about manufacturing the CTVs.The CTV game is a low margin, high volume business where manufacturing is key to profitability. Via: FE

A new BPO trend emerges...

It’s the latest buzzword in outsourcing and it’s generating millions of dollars for India. Publishing outsourcing is becoming the latest buzzword in India Inc. The publishing BPOs charge clients, rates as high as $50 per page for composing a college textbook. For a elementary school text book it’s between $35-$40 per page, almost seven times the billing rates in voice-based BPOs. The publishing BPO industry is already $300 million strong. Global publishing majors like Elsevier, McGraw Hill, Cambridge, John Wiley, Clover, Royal Academy Publishers, Pearson and Tailor & Francis outsource to India. Big Indian BPOs include Techbooks, Thomson Press, Innodata, Planman ITeS and Quark. According to sources, Wipro and Reliance are also planning forays.

Tez

TV Today Network is all set to launch its second Hindi news channel, ‘Tez’. The channel will go on air by August 22. However, the test run for the channel started on Thursday. According to informed sources, ‘Tez’ will follow a fast-news format, focusing more on headlines and not on analysis of news. This is why its tagline reads: ‘Khabrein Phataphat’. The sources say, “Today, an increasing number of people have less time to watch television. And even within that short span, which they devote to watching news, they want more relevant news. This is why ‘Tez’ will have only back-to-back delivery of news.” The new channel will be a general news channel and it plans to deliver around 20-30 news snippets in just 15 minutes. Incidentally, the television news network had tried the same strategy for its English news channel, Headlines Today. The network also has a 24-hour, Hindi news channel, Aaj Tak. The new channel, ‘Tez’, will follow a ‘nowness’ format, wherein news cl

Another BPO scam?

India's business services industry vowed on Tuesday to raise privacy standards after an Australian broadcaster said an undercover reporter bought confidential customer data linked to call centres. The National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM) said it would need formal complaints to help law enforcement after Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) television's Four Corners programme said its journalist bought birth and ATM details of Australians. This was the third case this year involving alleged sale of customer data by workers in the $5.2 billion back-office services industry that employs more than 350,000 people. Source: CIOL

Whom would you choose?

A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use While the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track. The train came, and you were just beside the track interchange. You could make the train change its course to the disused track and saved most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way? Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make... No cheating... Thought?? Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, I thought the same way initially because to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and motionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the r

India Is Great!

The population of India is 100 crores. But 19 crores are retired. That leaves 81 crores do the work. There are 25 crores in school, which leaves 56 crores to do the work. Of this there are 22 crores employed by the Central Government, leaving 34 crores to do the work. 4 crores are in the Armed Forces, which leaves 30 crores to do the work. Take away from above total the 20 crores people who work for State Governments (State Government employees officially do not work!) and that leaves 10 crores to do the work. Total unemployed are 8 crores and that leaves 2 crores to do the work. At any given time there are 1.2 crore people in hospitals, leaving 80 lakhs to do the work. Now, according to Indian Statistical Institute, there are 79,99,998 people in prisons throughout the country. That leaves just 2 people to do the work....... You and me!!! And currently YOU are sitting at your computer reading this. So I am the only person in our country who is working!

Kaun Banega Crorepati 2

It's Sunday 9pm and all the world was tuned in to watch the second round or as Amithabh popularly calls it "dwitheeya" of the popular game show, Kaun Banega Crorepati. KBC 2 was started last week and runs through Friday to Sunday at 9 pm. In Tamil Nadu, audiences have the added "advantage" of watching KBC in Tamil. The show is aired in Vijay TV and the voice over of Amitabh is done by Nizhakal Ravi. The prize money now is Rs. 2 crores and this time the viewers can also win prizes. There's a segment where the viewers can answer a question through SMS and can get a cool Rs. 2 lakhs if they are lucky. The game show has more added advantages in that the participant has an extra lifeline in the form of "flip", where he/she can change the question. PS: Watch the Vijay TV version only if you have the guts :-)

Dirty Habits! A good one...

Dirty Habit #1 – Looking down at the floor when speaking to someone. You must learn to look at someone directly in their eyes when speaking to them. If you were taught that staring at people was impolite, you’re absolutely right. However, this does not mean you can’t look at someone in his or her eyes. Dirty Habit #2 – Slouching when you’re standing or sitting down. Stand up straight. In our society being tall is a good thing. When you slouch you appear much shorter. Not only will standing straight make you look taller but it will also give you a confident look. Dirty Habit #3 – Frowning and not smiling enough. No one likes to spend time with someone who’s in a bad mood. If you’re not feeling too great then try to keep your distance. People love to spend time with upbeat, optimistic people. Make an effort to smile, not frown. Dirty Habit #4 – Avoiding strangers. Since the day you were born, your parents have taught you never to speak to strangers. Well, you’re a grown up now a
