Online India!

Online activity is finally catching up in India with the recent splurge in Broadband.(At least from among the educated urbans). I still remember the days when I used to pay Rs. 120/- for an hour of net surfing at now unthinkable speeds.

Today, one can even access Internet over his/her GPRS enabled phone for as low as 20 rupees for 24 hours (read: Airtel). As this penetration grows, online businesses are here to mushroom.

Case in point? Imagine you have a credit card, you can literally sit in front of a computer and do all the things that a normal person does by going out to shop.

Shopping? There's a myriad of online shopping sites from where you can buy everything from Clothing to the latest mobile phones. Some of the established players are Ebay India, Indiatimes, Fabmall, Sify, Rediff etc.

Bill Payment? Now you can pay all your bills, from electricity, telephone, water, cable etc. at the click of a mouse. Try visabillpay.com if you don't believe me.

Loans/Banking/Financial Services? Just log into any of the click-n-trade new age bank's website, fill in the forms, and the representative will come knocking at your doors the next day.

Vacation/Travel/Business Tour? You can book hotels, flights, trains etc. online thru sites like MakeMyTrip.Com, TravelGuru.Com. You can even book buses online now, thru KPN Travels website. The only thing you need to do is, pack your bags and go!

Movie Rentals? Now, this is something unique and interesting. I hate going to my local DVD rental shop as he charges me for every hour after 24 hours! Now, some smart alec has copied the Netflix business plan and created SeventyMM, an online indian movie rental site where you get unlimited movie rental for unlimited days for less than Rs. 200 per month or so.

Now, the only thing that hasn't been digitized is going to loo and taking a shower! For the rest of the things, it's just a click away. Don't you agree?

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!! Thanks to this Wikipedia link , forwarded to me by Vinay
