Is Ganguly faking an injury?

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was on Monday cleared by his orthopaedic doctor to play a Duleep Trophy match between East and North Zones from October 20.

Ganguly was suffering from early tennis elbow symptoms."He is improving. If this trends continues, and he responds to the treatment, then I see no reason why he can't play the Duleep match at Rajkot," said orthopaedic surgeon Dr.Kalyan Mukherjee.

Indian team's physiotherapist John Gloster (Chappel's chamcha) would also be there when Dr. Joshi examines Ganguly's injured elbow joint.

Indian team selection

One glance through the team sheet, and it's tough to miss the Greg Chappell stamp. The exclusion of Zaheer Khan and VVS Laxman and the general emphasis on multifaceted players provide clear signs. Zaheer's patchy form is surely a concern but, if murmurs are anything to go by, his defiant attitude has probably exacerbated matters. (Remember the rumors in Zimbawe?)

Laxman's case is even more delicate and it's high time the selectors clarify exactly where he stands as a player in the larger scheme of things. Appointing him the captain of India A in the premier domestic one-day competition was entirely unnecessary if he wasn't even an option. Nobody needs verification of Laxman's ability and considering what a domestic colossus he is, he will invariably score. To be left out after producing 48 and 110 in the two games of the Challenger Trophy and to see Gautam Gambhir (10 and 21) and Suresh Raina preferred, will only confuse him and probably stir up bitterness.

Kapil Dev's view

The former Indian captain, Kapil Dev, has said that Sourav Ganguly faces a "big challenge" in regaining his position in the side, after he was replaced as captain by Rahul Dravid.

"Ganguly needs to prove to everybody that he still deserves a place in the team. It would be a big challenge for him," Kapil told reporters on Saturday.

Sachin and Sourav deny spat

Reacting angrily to a media report suggesting ego clashes between them, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar have sought an apology and also threatened to take legal action if such "misleading" reports continue to be published in the future.

In a joint statement, the duo rubbished the media report, pertaining to Ganguly calling Tendulkar a "tourist" and the latter conveying to Kiran More, the chairman of the selection committee, his unwillingness to play under Ganguly's captaincy - thereby pushing Rahul Dravid for the role.

"We state that the story of Sourav calling Sachin a tourist and Sachin refusing to play under Sourav and thereby pushing Dravid is completely untrue," the statement said.

"[Kiran] More conveying to his colleagues that Sachin did not want to play under Sourav is completely false and misleading," it added.

The two players said they expected an apology on behalf of the newspaper (any guesses on the newspaper?) "[because] such made up, false stories are harmful for Indian cricket. If this is not rectified, legal action will have to be taken in future," they said.

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!! Thanks to this Wikipedia link , forwarded to me by Vinay
