I watched Nagesh Kukunoor's latest movie, Iqbal, this past weekend. In this era of only-nonsense commercial movies, this movie was a total surprise to me. I had read this movie's review from Sudish Kamath, the Hindu journalist and a blogriend of mine, but never thought it will be such a good movie.
I am a great fan of Kukunoor and have watched his previous flicks Hyderbad Blues Part I & II. Iqbal is his best movie out of the three.
It's a story about a deaf and dumb 18-year-old guy from a remote village in India who wants to play cricket for the Indian team. He finds a guru in drunkard Naseerudin Shah and the movie is masterly crafted into an emotional rollercoaster, one that lets you cheer and one that lets you sit back and think.
Taking a cue from Sudish, this is what he had to say:
Cast: Shreyas Talpade, Naseeruddin Shah, Shweta Prasad, Girish Karnad.
Director: Nagesh Kukunoor.
Genre: Feel-good drama
Storyline: An 18-year old speech and hearing impaired finds an unlikely coach in an alcoholic ex-cricketer to chase his dream of finding a seat in the Indian dressing room.
Bottomline: They don’t make films like this these days.
PS: It's a must watch for all cricket lovers. It's running in Apsara (Noon & Afternoon Show only)
