Ugh ho! Not Again

Last weekend when I visited my in-laws at Cochin, there was a heavy mix of vegetable curries for lunch & dinner. Me being a staunch non-veggie, I was feeling the pinch. Why so much of veggie dishes I ask and pat came the answer.
Apparently, Reliance's mega retail project, now in a vegetable vendor avataar has kickstarted in this part of India. Christined Reliance Fresh, they've opened small mom-and-pop kind of stores in almost all the major parts of Ernakulam.

Me being a follower of all the latest trends, I thought of checking out one and clicking a few snaps for all of you to see. But voila, the shop is closed. They had to close down because a "particular organization" has decided to ransack the place that evening coz they feel MNCs/INCs are eating up poor man's livelihood.

But from what I understood, vegetables & fruits were being sold at half the prices and the consumers a.k.a the common man was really happy and could afford more.

But the super powers that guide Kerala has decided to clamp down on organized retailing. According to FT.Com -

The government of Kerala is poised to ban all organised retailing, including stores run by the country’s largest company Reliance Industries.

Not content with keeping multinationals out of the sector, Kerala’s communist government is threatening legislation that would also head off Reliance, which last year launched a $5bn national retail strategy and has opened six of 70 stores proposed for the state

  1. Now I hope everyone understands why kerala is always green. Hardcore communists will never allow development to happen. They don't develop and they will not others develop. Please note, I don't have anything personally against kerala, it is just my view about the parties and unwanted unions that are stopping the betterment of a good place.

  2. Hi Sriram:
    your perspective about not allowing the state to grow is correct, but why should the green be compromised; today we compromise on greens after a decade we will be running around saying "plant a tree" as is the case in many states/countries now;
    there are so many things that can be done without compromising on "GOOD" things, which the govt has to dfntly look into.

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!! Thanks to this Wikipedia link , forwarded to me by Vinay
