Another tragedy in the making?

I have been hooked on to TV ever since the first news of tsunami broke out in Sun News channel at around 09:00 AM yesterday. It's been a tragedy of a massive kind and the latest figures say that around 25,000 people have died in the South East Asian region.

But one startling thing that came to my mind while watching all these clippings was the sheer lack of information about what has happened in Andaman & Nicobar islands with no/or very little information coming out of there.

Is something terribly wrong there or is it just because of no access to any communication equipment??? While praying for the best, I searched for some basic information about these Islands and the findings are shocking!!

What would have happened to Andaman & Nicobar Islands??

District of Andamans is Northern Part of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and comprises of 550 Islands, Islets and rocks out which only 26 are inhabited. Some of these islands are large such as Middle Andaman, North Andaman, South Andaman, Baratang and Little Andaman islands.

Separated from Andamans group of Island by 145 Kms, wide 10 degree channel, Nicobars District has an area of 1841 kms, comprising 22 Islands Twelve of which are inhabited

As per 1991 census, population of the district is 39021 of which 24929 are tribals.

According to an NDTV report, around 10,000 people are feared dead in Port Blair and Car Nicobar islands alone. And even the Government is admitting that it has no information about other places in Andaman & Nicobar.

Let's just pray that the remaining 30,000 odd people are safe.....

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!! Thanks to this Wikipedia link , forwarded to me by Vinay
