Reliance Industries Ltd’s (RIL’s) much-anticipated splash in the supermarkets segment with large format stores will finally happen in September, 2006, according to sources in the know.
The plan, yet to be announced officially, is to start rolling out 1,500 supermarkets and 1,000 hypermarkets in phases in important towns across the country.
RIL has a record of pulling off gargantuan projects of similar scale and size. Reliance Infocomm was conceptualised by Mukesh Ambani’s core team and before that the team had another feather in its cap when it unveiled the Jamnagar Refinery, which has attained a capacity of 32 million tonnes per annum.
