Salaam Namaste!

Time: 04:00 AM
Date: Sunday - November 6, 2005

As I am writing this, that's what my digital clock shows in its screen.

One might be wondering what this fellow' is doing at this time of the night when the whole "world is sleeping".... Well, that's what I've been doing for the past 4 years of my life!

Yes, come November 7, I would have completed 4 years of my professional life. As I take a trip down the memory lane, the most amazing thing to me is that the so called "night shift" has never bothered me. People ask me in amazement how the hell were you able to work in the "night" for 4 years. The answer is simple. Look what I am doing on a Saturday night.

The root cause for all night shift related problems is that no one realizes that one needs to take extra care in your daily routine to get adjusted to the "graveyard shift". I've always made it a point to sleep for 7 hours daily and have at least 2 meals a day properly. And the worst thing that most people do is to change their sleeping habits every weekend!! This totally confuses the biological rhythm of our poor body.

Okay, okay, am stopping!! Yeah, I know what you are thinking.... This guy is being overtly philosophical...Well, I think I deserve an applause myself :-)

The only flip side to these 4 years of professional life has been a significant increase in my body mass, to be exact, an extra 30 Kgs :-)

PS: Wondering why I gave "Salaam Namaste" as the title? Thought of an apt title for sometime, but since it's 4 in the morning and my brain is telling me to go sleep, I decided to put the title of the current album am listening to... hee hee...Salaam Namaste everyone!

  1. Hey RC, many many congrats on completing 4 years of graveyard (???) shift. I totally agree with you. You should adjust your day-time routine to work in night shift for long run. And I'd just want to add another point that your mind should accept that when you are working that is the day and when you are sleeping that is night, and that doesn't depend on the sunlight. Ever since I have joined this field, I make sure that when I leave for the day, irrespective of the time I leave (it could be 10 o'clock in the morning), I always wish good night to others.

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!!
