In a significant foray, the Rs 500 crore appliances division of Godrej & Boyce Mfg Company Ltd is entering the full line consumer electronics segment, and may launch its colour televisions in the Indian market in 2006.
Godrej & Boyce's plans to enter the CTV segment come at a time when the Rs 20,000 crore CTV market is getting increasingly competitive, and is dominated by Korean majors like LG and Samsung and the Videocon portfolio. Indian players, thus far, have failed to make any impact with brands like BPL and Onida being essentially marginal players. The market is, however, growing at 15% a year. It's still unclear how Godrej plans to go about manufacturing the CTVs.The CTV game is a low margin, high volume business where manufacturing is key to profitability.
