Dr. GB Stadium, KG Gardens - July 16, 2005
Overwhelmed by the power of precise bowling, HR BPO went down to ICT by 8 wickets in the KG Cricket 2005 Finals here.
ICT won the toss and elected to field, the outcome of a brilliant strategy laid out by their astute captain. It is worth to mention here that ICT played more of a mind game by electing to field first (HR BPO had been terrific chasers in this tournament) and clearly reflects what mindset can do to one during such pressure situations.
Let down by an innocuous batting attack where none deserved any notice for their performance, the only hope left for the HR-BPO Team was the performance of Winston with a sparkling innings of 25 runs; the ‘chukka’ over long on will be etched in one’s memory for a long time! Admittedly, the ICT team did a creditable job holding the incisive HR-BPO Team almost throughout the first innings.
Exemplary work by Santhosh (3 wickets for 16 runs) of ICT was enough to keep the pacy HR-BPO Team under check and the pressure beyond a stage was too much to smother for them as wickets fell down in a heap. Consequently, HR-BPO collapsed to 64 all out.
Undoubtedly, ICT was at their "best" as they muffled up their batting in less than 10 overs with some good knocks from Rajesh (32 runs) & Senthil (13 runs). Had they caught one of those balls down the long on boundary maybe…maybe things would have been better for HR-BPO, but it was just not their day! Ranjith did try some innovations in the bowling attack, but nothing seemed to work out for them on this bright sunny day.
Bottom line, both the teams richly deserved to be in the finals but what separated them was the homework and preparation done by the ICT. Their field placements were perfect and it seemed as if they had a plan for every player from the opposition. Santhosh was declared the Man of the Finals for his magical bowling spell.
Soon after, the presentation ceremony was held, attended by Mr. Ashok, Mr. Sridhar, and Mr. Shyam Sundar. Kumaresan (ICT) bagged the Best Batsman of the Series award for his brilliant knocks totaling a whopping 98 runs. Suresh of ICT was adjudged the Best Bowler of the Series with a total of 10 wickets in his kitty.
It was a proud moment for both the teams as they posed with their respective trophies, a memorable debut for HR-BPO indeed! As the curtains fell down on Cricket 2005, HR has come up with an ambitious plan to conduct a Throw Ball Tournament for the ladies…..what a cracker of a contest that is going to be….!!!
