Michael Robertson, the founder of pioneering Web service MP3.com, formally announced his new digital music store, MP3tunes.com.
The venture was unveiled in San Diego at a trade conference, Digital Summit.
Robertson said the service offers 330,000 legally licensed songs from independent artists for purchase at $0.88 each.
The tracks are not encoded with antipiracy technology, so "they will work on any computer and with any portable player," he added in a statement.
