Anniyan - A review!

Yes, I finally watched Anniyan!! I had wanted to go for it the first day itself, but could only manage to go this Sunday, paying 100 bucks for a 35 rupee ticket! So, here's what I think about the movie.

I am a big fan of Shankar in that he always chips in with a social centric movie very relevant for the Indian audience with all the masala expected out of a Kollywood movie -- well, this time was no different.

Rules Ramanujam alias Ambi, the protagonist, is a middle-class Iyengar lawyer who goes by the rules like not crossing the yellow line in a traffic signal, helping poor people file cases against treacherous humans in Consumer Courts etc. He is in love with Sada, who's his neighbor but hasn't expressed his love or is afraid of it. Vivek plays the role of his best friend who helps him out with his love affairs and as a CID officer under DGP Prakash Raj.

The plot unfolds as the good natured Ambi turns into an Undertaker (WWE fame) like man named Anniyan, his dual persona and starts killing people who have done hinderous mistakes in society for money sake. The plot thickens as one more persona gets created as Remo, the love interest of Sada....

The film's highlights are:

The Thiruvaiyaar music festival -- well known exponents like Kunnakudi Vaidhyanathan, Sudha Raghunathan and Unnikrishnan appear in the scene, which is a recreation of the real festival.

Randaka Randaka Song -- Though the song was sloppy, they have painted one whole village, some 10 lorries, some 20 ambassadors, and rocks (portraying stars like Sivaji & MGR) with colorful paints.

Climax Scene -- The whole theatre clapped when the climax scene unfolded, brilliant Vikram!! You deserve a national award.

Jackie Chan kinda fight scenes (though some were overdone).

Flip Side:

One expected more of Yana Gupta!!

First 20 minutes was boring.

Too many sound effects (one could hardly hear the dialogue rendition).

What do you think of Anniyan?

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!! Thanks to this Wikipedia link , forwarded to me by Vinay
