Dr. GB Stadium, KG Gardens -- June 25, 2005:
The weather was at its best with a cool breeze blowing through the ground when HR-BPO took on FRM-A in the last match of Knockout Round 2. Needless to say, a lot was at stake and the ground was buzzing with excitement.
HR-BPO won the toss and elected to take the willow with Sameer and Ranjith in the opening slot. But what followed after that was a disastrous collapse of the opening order when both Sameer and Ranjith got out in the first over for 0 and Amarjith also got out pretty soon for 3, courtesy Vinoth's brilliant bowling spell. Though the start was a little shaky, HR-BPO steadied their innings as their middle order batsmen played with righteousness and got the scoreboard ticking. Winston & Naresh played their natural strokes and brought back the team from the verge of shambles. Clayton and Kumar followed and they both batted brilliantly and scored some very valuable runs. Clayton got out for 28 and Kumar was not out for 31. FRM-A couldn't really capitalize on their early advantage and had quite a few extras by way of byes. The last few overs saw some more wickets falling and HR-BPO finished off their 20 overs with just 1 wicket remaining and 116 on their scoreboard.
Johnson and Ajith started the FRM-A innings and quickly made 25 runs before Ajith got out for 6. Chandru came next and what followed next was one of the finest partnerships in the match. Johnson played brilliantly and took 55 runs with 2 sixes in his kitty to reach the best score of the tournament so far! Chandru on the other hand ably supported Johnson as the match was slowly slipping off of HR-BPOs hands. The fielders were throwing the balls in all directions and had quite a many miss fields. Johnson got out towards the end of the innings when he tried to up the score and finish off the match. Vinoth came next and with the help of a brilliant sixer scored 14 quick runs. FRM-A finished off their innings in 16.1 overs, thus making them the number 1 team.
The crowd went crazy and there was jubilation all around with some of the cars doing a victory lap in the ground with Johnson on tow.
HR-BPO will face FRM-A again in the semis thanks to their good run rate. Unfortunately, FRM-B is out of the tournament despite beating EDS-B in the second round due to their low run rate.
