Dr. GB Stadium, KG Gardens - June 4, 2005
The afternoon temperature was at a screeching high and warm air was breezing through the stadium as the mighty FRM A took on the newbies Software C. What transpired next was a jaw dropping, lip smacking thrilling match which quite frankly even I didn't expect.
FRM A was all cool as they were the clear favorites and had a brilliant line up of all-round players. FRM A won the toss and as one would expect under the sweltering heat decided to take the willow first. With some brilliant catches and awesome fielding, S/W C was able to penetrate through the batting line up of FRM A and only two people could score more than 20 runs (Astin & Rajesh). What was amazing was S/W C's agility on the field and it was the best that we have seen in this series of tournaments thus far. Their field placements were precise, catching was perfect, reflexes were strong, and backing up was powerful. It would be suffice to say that S/W C really gave "FRM A" a run for their money! At the end of their innings, FRM A was down and out for 105/8, much lesser than what they would have wanted to score. Interestingly enough, Mr. Extras was the top scorer for FRM A!
With the match evenly poised at the half way stage, the tigers who were sleepy in their batting rose up to the situation and started their prowl with some "brilliant" bowling spells. Vinoth & Ajith bowled a couple of neat overs each and set the stage up for Johnson, Sathish & Hariharan. If Sathish rattled the batsmen with his incisive pace and bounce, Hariharan maintained a tight leash on line and length and prevented any scoring opportunities to come by. These bowlers ran haversack and dismissed the top order by drinks break at the end of the 10th over. They fielded like "there was no tomorrow", Johnson running back from short leg to mid on to catch a skier was reminiscent of Kapil Dev's catch to dismiss Richards in 1983 World Cup. They finished the game at 14th over with S/W C managing to put up 45 runs on the score board. Sathish claimed a 5-wkt haul and took home the ball as a memento, which he richly deserved.
FRM A is through to the second round and they need to bat much better if they nurse any ambition of regaining the coveted trophy they won in 2003!
