Parineeta - A review!

Enjoying the day shift, I went and watched Parineeta yesterday at Apsara. Though I don't usually write reviews about Bollywood, I felt I should definitely write one for this because it was so special and well made! So, here's my first try at movie reviews!

After the immense success of Munnabhai MBBS, Vidhu Vinod Chopra has made another classic in Parineeta, an adaptation of the bengali novel written by Saratchandra Chatterjee.

The movie is all about the story of Shekar Rai (Saif Ali Khan) and Lolita (debutant Vidya Balan) who form a special bonding from childhood as neighbords, but is in confusion of whether their relationship is love or friendship. All is well until the Girish Babu (Sanjay Dutt) arrives from London to meet his family. Misunderstanding brews between Shekar and Lolita as Shekar's father, the wealthy real estate mogul acts as the villian in their relationship.

I don't want to tell the whole story here, so better go and watch!!

Surprises:
Saif Ali Khan's acting!!
Vidya Balan's portrayal of Lolita.
Rekha's performance as a lounge singer performing for Moulin Rouge.

Misses:
Reminded me of Devdas at times.
Lack of good performance by supporting actors.

Verdict: A must watch classical for all those in love and who plans to fall in love!! :-)

Rating: 4.5/5

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!! Thanks to this Wikipedia link , forwarded to me by Vinay
