After a big slump, Medical Transcription industry is hotting up again in India and especially in Coimbatore. There's a lot of money flowing into this segment of the outsourcing business and more and more companies are either acquiring or consolidating their base.
Take for example SPI Healthcare. They are a Phillipines based medical transcription company who recently acquired the medical transcription business of KGiSL in Coimbatore {where I work :-)} in an all cash deal. They are looking at around 1,000 plus transcribers in the near future.
And HealthScribe, one of the biggies in this business has decided to open up a center in Coimbatore. This is the second such center in India after Bangalore.
There are a lot of small companies in Coimbatore that do a lot of medical transcription work. They typically are a 100 plus employee company, but run profitably.
The other major player in this space, Spryance has also decided to up its employee base from 1,200 to 2,200 by the end of 2005, according to this article. But Spryance is basically a home based medical transcription company.
The bottom line is, this will open up more employment opportunities for the youngsters in and around Coimbatore and Kerala.
PS: Coimbatore is also gearing up to take a significant share of the IT outsourcing pie with Wipro Spectramind and Cognizant opening up offices.

as a transcriptionist in the U.S., I have to say how much that sucks. I think it's totally unfair to U.S. workers.
