The World Economic Forum, arguably the globe’s most important gathering of corporate elites each year, officially begins today. But it’s already clear who is pulling out all the stops to be this year’s star attraction.
India.
Driving into the snow-covered village, one can’t avoid the onslaught of Indian advertising that’s been plastered across buses or along on roadsides. It will be the scents and tastes of the subcontinent that will ultimately overpower the closing gala soiree on Saturday night for CEOs from 75 of the 100 largest companies, a host of senior government officials and intellectual elites.
The Indian message is boldly engineered to be “in-your-face” China. The omnipresent slogan trumpets that India is “the world’s fastest growing free-market democracy.” Its delegates have grown to 80 from 30. China still plays Davos low-key, partly because it’s the Chinese New Year but more, concede Davos organizers, because it still is uncomfortable in a venue it can’t control.
