Get Along At Work!

Everybody would agree that a dream job is a place where one looks forward to going to work and not a place one dreads because of the co-workers. With diversity at workplace becoming a reality in all fields, getting along with everyone at work has become a real challenge. Developing positive relationships at work is like block building. Just as fitting the right block in the right bracket leads to the desired shape, a right application of behavior at right time leads to better understanding, communication and hence better relations.

It is important to realize that when people come to work each day, they don't leave their insecurities, personal problems and personality quirks at home. They come marching right into the office with them, and that's why there are so many conflicts and hiccups at work.

Here are a few tips to improve relations and make working a pleasant experience -

Weigh Your Words
How one says something counts for far more than what one says. When confronted with a difficult situation, one must always say less than one thinks. Curbing one’s tongue in a stressful situation will be more likely to create fewer stressful situations because how an individual handles him/herself in a crisis will give others confidence in him/her and in their ability to bring problems and issues to one’s attention.

Keep Promises
Whenever one makes a promise at a workplace or elsewhere, no matter what the cost, one must be ready to keep them. The easiest way to lose the respect of others is by guaranteeing things that one is either unable or unwilling to deliver. Others will note an irresponsible attitude and be wary of approaching an unreliable guy, who continually breaks his promises.

Be Supportive And Encouraging
Never let an opportunity to show kindness or encouragement to others to pass by. Praise good work, regardless of who did it. Sometimes one can turn even the most hardened of fellow workers into real softies once they realize that you are not afraid to compliment them or give encouraging words, despite how they may perceive you ordinarily. At the same time, when giving criticism, do it helpfully and gently, never spitefully. Show concern for another’s feelings and well being. One can benefit greatly from even the smallest kindness shown.

Know People
Learn about others’ interests, their homes and families and their problems. Gaining the confidence of fellow workers is made much easier when one demonstrates a caring attitude. When others are joyful, rejoice with them, when troubled or in mourning, be sympathetic. Let everyone realize that they are regarded important.

Be cheerful
Be cheerful. Don’t dwell on your minor aches and pains and small disappointments. Maintaining a cheerful attitude at all times will not only make others more comfortable in your presence, but you will feel better as well. Smile is contagious, so spread smiles as far as you can. A smile can convey a lot of things without even saying a word.

Be Open
Don’t let yourself get into arguments. Discuss things with people rather than argue. Being disagreeable is likely to put others off; they will much prefer to deal with those who have a calm and reasoned approach. When confronted with a situation that you either disapprove of, or dislike, keep this in mind: it is the mark of a superior mind that can disagree without being disagreeable.

Mind Own Vices And Virtues
Refuse to discuss others’ vices or problems. Don’t allow gossip to rule your life. Tearing down another to prop yourself up is an extraordinary waste of time; furthermore, it can be very destructive. Especially in the workplace, morale is vitally important.

Take Care Of Others’ Feelings
Humour at another’s expense is rarely worth the trouble. Not only that, the hurt and pain felt by that person will often come when least expected. Take into account another person’s feelings before you poke fun. Things said in jest are often the sharpest barbs to be felt. Be humorous not pungent.

Don’t Lend An Ear To What Others Say About You
The person making snide or rude comments about you is just trying to trouble you and provoke a conflict. Leave it unattended and tell yourself ‘the person is trivial and misinformed’. Live in such a way that what is said about you cannot be taken to heart. Let your own actions determine how others see you, and then they will not believe the negative things said.

Your Credit Will Come To You
Do your best. It’s the best you can do. Concerning yourself about how much credit you receive will only burden you with more stress. Let others see your work ethics, and you will be able to take pride and pleasure in a job well done.

Be Flexible
You can’t change anyone. You can intimate them on how you personally feel about a matter and what can be the economical and professional implications of the same. If they understand it is good for you, if they disagree try adopting better means of communication, give examples and let the senior management hold the dice and communicate the depth of matter. You can't change them - just as they can't change you. And it doesn't do much good to embarrass them, berate them or seek revenge when they've mistreated you. This is a matter of strategy and needs sensible action.

Be Communicative
Keep your co-workers informed about potential problem areas. Let them know that you are aware of the potential problem and that you are taking steps to control it. Encourage team-mates to inform each other. Generate trust so that in case there is a serious impending problem in working area they can share and come out with better and effective solutions.

Be Unbiased
Learn to treat all people equally. Always remember to care for the person. You may not agree with the behavior, but be kind to the person. Give him or her the benefit of the doubt when behavior is not up to your expectations. The best thing to do in a situation like this is to talk to the person directly in a softer manner.

Be Positive
Lastly, but most importantly, find something positive in everyone and build on that something. Learn to be a positive “magnet” with your attitude toward yourself and others. Develop your attitude, which clearly says `I care about you and I want to get along with you.’

Ariyaatha pillakku choriyumbol ariyum!

As a kid/teenager, my only source of information to learn malayalam was Manorama Publications' Balaram, a children's fortnightly and my granny. I still vividly remember how she used to teach me the basics of malayalam whenever I come to Kerala on vacations. My granny was also a great source of amazement for me as she used malaylam proverbs or the so called "pazham chollu" every now and then. These proverbs, though small in length and use, had deep insights! Though I can read/write Malayalam today, thx to Balarama and my granny, I used to miss her proverbs a lot. But not anymore!! Thanks to this Wikipedia link , forwarded to me by Vinay
