Microsoft Corp. said it will acquire Groove Networks Inc., a closely held maker of office collaboration software, for an undisclosed amount.
Groove, based in Beverly, Mass., makes "virtual office" software that allows groups of workers both in and outside companies to share files on their personal computers and to work on them simultaneously. Groove's peer-to-peer networking concept is similar to Napster's original music-sharing system.
Groove was founded in 1997 by Ray Ozzie, the creator of the Lotus Notes e-mail software. Once the acquisition is completed, Mr. Ozzie will join Microsoft as its chief technical officer, reporting to Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates.
